Daron Acemoglu

Author of Why Nations Fail and The Narrow Corridor. One of the 10 Most Cited Economists in the World

Recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal and author of the bestseller "Why Nations Fail"



Daron Acemoglu is Professor of Applied Economics at MIT and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the British Academy of Sciences, among other distinguished institutions. He is the editor of Redesigning AI, which discusses how new technologies can be used to create more just societies. He is the author of five books, including Why Nations Fail. The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty, which he wrote in collaboration with James A. Robinson. Other notable titles are Introduction to Modern Economic Growth and The Narrow Corridor, also in conjunction with James A. Robinson.

Acemoglu has applied his knowledge in different disciplines such as political economy, economic development, economic growth, technological change, inequality, labor economics and network economics. In 2004 he received the inaugural T. W. Shultz Prize from the University of Chicago, in 2017 he was awarded the Carnegie Fellowship and a year later the Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize. In 2019 he was awarded the Global Economy Prize in 2019 and CME Mathematical and Statistical Research Institute in 2021.
